Elopement -
The quietness of Akaroa was somewhat disturbed by the elopement of a young couple on Wednesday the 22nd January last.
It appears that the young lady, who has suffered for a length of time from the harsh conduct of an uncle, who is her guardian, had formed an attachment, which ended in an elopement with a young man of her acquaintance, her guardian of course disapproving of the match.

They left Akaroa in the middle of the night, and arrived at Pigeon Bay early in the morning, covered with mud from the dirty state of the roads. Having been hospitably treated there by a gentleman famous for his liberality, they prepared to take their departure by the mail boat. In the meantime however an unlooked for difficulty in the shape of the old uncle appeared, accompanied by a young gentleman who had aspired to the fair one's hand with his consent. These latter searched about for the missing ones and at length discovered them hiding among some trees.

Then commenced an altercation in French, interspersed with imprecations on each other's head.
The old man took the girl by one arm and the gay lothario by the other, but the muscular arm of the blacksmith (for he was a blacksmith) prevailed, and he carried his intended on his back through the sea to the boat, and then shoved off, amidst cheers and hurrahs from a number of spectators on shore. The discomfited party followed up to his middle in water and reached the boat, a feat which only procured him a ducking for his pains.
After some altercation they all got into the boat and proceeded to Lyttelton, the young couple to see a clergyman, and the others to appeal to the Resident Magistrate.

It seems however that before they reached Lyttelton all differences were settled and they have proceeded back to Akaroa to be joined together with the consent of all parties concerned at the Hymeneal Alter.

37 History of St Peter's Church
Courtesy of Akaroa Civic Trust website - www.historicakaroa.co.nz (worth a visit)

The first Anglican services were held in the warehouse of the Nanto-Bordelaise Company and in 1851, Rev. W.J. Aylmer arrived from England to be the first resident incumbent in Akaroa.
The following year Samuel Farr designed the first St. Peter's church, erected in Church Street. The Church Street church proved too small and has since been demolished.

St. Peters is the second Anglican church and was built in 1863.
John Watson, Akaroa's second magistrate, donated the more central site in Rue Balguerie.
The building of St. Peter's was made possible by grants from the Canterbury Provincial government, the Diocese, the sale of the Church Street church and subscriptions from personal donors.
The architect is unknown, but Jonathan Mane from the University of Canterbury thinks that the church nave is likely to have been designed by architectural vicar of Onehunga, Dr. A.G. Purchas. The distinctive entrance tower and spire bear a strong resemblance to St. Stephan's Tuahiwi, also designed by Purchas.
The timber cost £160, the site was cleared for £15 and the payment to the builders, George Checkley, Joseph Bates and Robert Newton amounted to £242.
Work commenced in 1863 and was completed in 1864.
It is thought to be a Selwyn church after George Augustus Selwyn, the first Bishop of New Zealand.

At a meeting of parishioners thirteen years later, Mr. Penlington referring to the need to enlarge the church, said that when he brought his wife and eleven children to worship, he liked to be near them to keep them in order, but was obliged to seat his wife in one place and his family in another.
Plans for enlarging the church by moving the sanctuary eastward, and giving more space where the organ and choir now are, were drawn up by Messrs Kane and Drewett. Mr. Penlington's tender of £280 was accepted and the new transepts were formally opened on Wednesday April 25, 1877. (Gwenda Turner) (The HPT records disagree with this and state...In 1876, Benjamin Mountfort designed the transepts and chancel. ) These additions and the original 1863 portion were separately consecrated by Bishop Harper.

There is a single grave in the churchyard and it has caused some controversy over the years.
The inscription on it reads "Sacred to the memory of Rev. E.B. Nevill, curate of Wanganui, died January 31, 1875." His brother, the first Bishop of Dunedin decided that the curate should be buried here, and as there was no vicar in Akaroa at the time, the Bishop chose the place of burial and found a grave digger who worked through the night in the rain, the Bishop bringing him hot drinks. At about 4am the grave was ready, the coffin was brought and the Bishop read the burial service. That morning he left by stage coach for Pigeon Bay, Lyttelton and Christchurch. Two years later, the vestry considered removing the body, but it was decided the body should remain, but not set a precedent for further interment in the churchyard.

Services are held at St. Peter's church each Sunday starting at 9:00am.
More information on the interior fittings of the church are available on a pamphlet held in the foyer.

Design Notes
Early English Gothic Revival style. Paired lancet windows, entrance tower. St. Peter's is an elegant design with vertical timbering and high Gothic windows. It is sited in a slightly elevated position where the finely proportioned tower creates a focal point in that part of the township. The interior has a fine gallery at the West End.
