Elopement -
The quietness of Akaroa was somewhat disturbed by the elopement of a young couple on Wednesday the 22nd January last.
It appears that the young lady, who has suffered for a length of time from the harsh conduct of an uncle, who is her guardian, had formed an attachment, which ended in an elopement with a young man of her acquaintance, her guardian of course disapproving of the match.
They left Akaroa in the middle of the night, and arrived at Pigeon Bay early in the morning, covered with mud from the dirty state of the roads. Having been hospitably treated there by a gentleman famous for his liberality, they prepared to take their departure by the mail boat. In the meantime however an unlooked for difficulty in the shape of the old uncle appeared, accompanied by a young gentleman who had aspired to the fair one's hand with his consent. These latter searched about for the missing ones and at length discovered them hiding among some trees.
Then commenced an altercation in French, interspersed with imprecations on each other's head.
The old man took the girl by one arm and the gay lothario by the other, but the muscular arm of the blacksmith (for he was a blacksmith) prevailed, and he carried his intended on his back through the sea to the boat, and then shoved off, amidst cheers and hurrahs from a number of spectators on shore. The discomfited party followed up to his middle in water and reached the boat, a feat which only procured him a ducking for his pains.
After some altercation they all got into the boat and proceeded to Lyttelton, the young couple to see a clergyman, and the others to appeal to the Resident Magistrate.
It seems however that before they reached Lyttelton all differences were settled and they have proceeded back to Akaroa to be joined together with the consent of all parties concerned at the Hymeneal Alter.
